A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A Court of Thorns and Roses is one of my favourite series and is home to some beloved characters – that being said, while I enjoyed my read I don’t understand why this novella needed to be written. A Court of Frost and Starlight takes place in the aftermath of the events of a Court of Wings and Ruin, so our main characters are picking up the pieces of broken lives and rebuilding their city. Nothing of real consequence happens in this book, so if you were to not read it before diving into the upcoming series, then you wouldn’t miss anything.
The aspect of this story that threw me off the most was that it was written in the first person. I am typically not as much of a fan of the first person as the third person, because you really have to pay attention to the chapter titles when you’re listening to an audiobook to figure out who is speaking. What made it worse for me is that many times it didn’t feel like the characters had their unique, distinctive voices. A few times I thought one character was the MC in that chapter for a few pages and it was someone completely different – that’s an issue. Each of these characters had such distinct personalities and it should have been fairly easy to determine who was speaking.
Sarah J Maas has also included more sex scenes in this series as subsequent books are released and this is no different. Despite its short length, there are many scenes strewn throughout this novella and daydreams of it happening. It is just something she puts in her books, a lot. While it may be fine for some readers, I thought it would be beneficial to mention for younger readers or people who might find it off-putting.
Even though I had a lot of issues with the point of view, voices of the characters, and utter lack of plot – I did really enjoy being back in the world.
