I will pretty much always be interested in a Hades and Persephone retelling, so Girl, Goddess, Queen already had a premise that appealed to me. I really enjoyed Bea Fitzgerald’s take on Kore and Hades, especially getting to see the two of them interact and watching their relationship develop. Their personalities were fun together, and I liked the way the book reworked familiar pieces of the myth instead of simply retelling the version we already know. One of my favorite details was getting to see how Kore becomes Persephone and where that name comes from within this version of the story.

My biggest problem was that, despite liking the characters, it felt like almost nothing actually happened. So much of the book is very slice-of-life: sitting in rooms, reading scrolls, pretending to be together, and then eventually actually being together. I didn’t dislike those scenes, but after a while I kept waiting for the plot to really kick in, and it never felt like it did. Once I got around two-thirds of the way through, that lack of momentum started making the book drag, and I wasn’t particularly excited to pick it back up, so the last part took me a while to finish. I still enjoyed it, especially because I already love Hades and Persephone retellings and liked this version of the characters, but I wish there had been more story happening around them.
