The Mental Load: Comics from the Front Lines of Women’s Lives and Other Social Justice Issues by Emma
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Honestly, this is so true. I am super torn with my rating because there are a number of factors that go into it, as it is both a graphic novel and a translation. The author also illustrated the comics and I just didn’t care for it. I appreciate all of the time and effort that went into it, but the overall feel was a 2- or 3-star rating for illustrations. The text and sentiment, on the other hand, was a pure 5-star rating. Finally, this was originally written in French and then translated in this edition to English for more widespread readership. I thought the translator did a fantastic job and everything made sense.
While I have never personally experienced some of the things that the author discussed, I could still see the truth of them. She tackles a lot of issues that most people would shy away from and I appreciated that. I found that it was both incredibly informative and entertaining as a result. I would highly recommend it to any adults to read, regardless of gender or where they are in their lives. I bought it for my library, read it and immediately passed it on to my co-worker, who loved it (and also thought it was so true). Some chapters will strike you down to the core and you’ll want to pass them on to the people involved in the same situation as you. It makes you think and that’s important. I would highly recommend this graphic novel.
