War Storm – Victoria Aveyard

War Storm (Red Queen, #4)War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

War Storm is the fourth and final book in the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. In this book, the main characters face the final battles to determine the future of Norta. Mare puts her heart on the backburner and dedicates herself to the Scarlet Guard’s cause. Cal feels that it is his duty to pick up the crown and be a better King than his predecessors. Maven is still obsessed with the girl he lost and grappling with the voices in his head. Evangeline struggles with what she feels she must do and what her heart calls her to do. And Iris finds herself in a position she never expected, forced to live with someone she despises.

I felt that some parts of the previous books dragged at times, but despite the length of this book, I was interested in what was happening most of the time. Yes, there were slow points but you cannot have constant action and high adrenaline for over 600 pages. That being said, there were still point-of-view characters that I enjoyed reading significantly more than others. For example, I’m still not a huge fan of Mare but she has grown on me over the course of the series. I was more interested in Maven, Cal or Evangeline’s chapters than Iris or Mare’s. I did listen to it as an audiobook though and wasn’t a fan of Iris’ narrator, so that could have contributed to it.

This was probably my favourite book in the series. I felt that the author definitely grew as a writer as the series progressed and was more impressed by this book than the others. As a result, it felt like a 4 1/2 star read compared to the rest of the series, but it was still a low 4 star read when compared to other books. I was likely too easy on the previous books in the series, but I was hesitant to continue the series after the first few books (I cannot recall which one exactly). I am glad that I continued to read the series and found out what happened.

There’s not much more that I can discuss without spoilers, so I would just say this is my favourite book in the series. I appreciated the detail and multiple POV characters given to this specific book.
