The Mortal Instruments – Cassandra Clare (Graphic Novel)

The Mortal Instruments: The Graphic Novel Vol. 1The Mortal Instruments: The Graphic Novel Vol. 1 by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The graphic novel adaptation of the Mortal Instruments captures the feeling of the story as well as some particularly memorable lines brilliantly – my one negative is the art. I know that Cassandra Jean does a lot of the art for the Shadowhunter Chronicles and maybe it’s just this particular book, but I was not impressed. In fact, I genuinely didn’t enjoy the artwork. To me, the illustrations felt rushed at times and didn’t always capture the main characters that we love.

The plot felt like it managed to keep the important plot points from the first half of the City of Bones, without missing important moments. My hope is that more time is dedicated to the second half of the story so that the illustrator has the time to properly capture the characters. Despite those feelings, I did really enjoy reading this version of the story.

Too bad. The books are so good I would have expected this to be better.
