Owlcrate Unboxing – Wanderlust (July 2017)

I have purchased Owlcrate before and I did an unboxing for it on here before. When I heard the theme, I was really intrigued and the clues confirmed that I would be receiving a book that I already knew I wanted to read. Plus, the items were supposed to be related to Lord of the Rings, Shades of Magic, and Fantastic Beasts so that sounded amazing. You can watch my unboxing at the end of the post.

You’ve been warned and only spoilers come beyond this point.

Sometimes I love the art cards that come in the box, but this was not one of those times. It’s just not my personal aesthetic and I can’t see myself displaying it anywhere.

I love the quote on this canvas drawstring “backpack”. The green shade is so perfectly reminiscent of the Shire and Lord of the Rings. The quote is beautiful as well and this bag is growing on me, although I didn’t have strong feelings for it initially.

Owlcrates generally come with a little pin and this one has a plane and some trees on it. Pretty basic and I’m not impressed.

I was so excited to be receiving an item inspired by the Shades of Magic trilogy by V.E. Schwab and then received a mirror. The art is super pretty and I wish it was on something like a pillow, mug or an art print.

This is a felt bag tag or luggage tag. I get that it’s an owl, so that’s how it “fits” but it just doesn’t seem to mesh well with the other items. To be honest, despite the overarching theme, the items seem to be very disparate and this doesn’t feel like a cohesive box to me. I loved the Run Away with the Circus box because each item just went so perfectly with the theme and one another.

This is just a basic Funko keychain of Newt Scamander, which is not what I was expecting when it says an item will be inspired by Fantastic Beasts. Trust me, I love Funko Pops but I subscribed to the crate to get something unique – not a $5 keychain that I could pick up at the local store.

This tiny travel journal comes in one of eight different designs, so be sure to check out other peoples’ unboxings to see what else was sent out.

This “art print” is just printed on cardboard, so at first I thought it was a postcard. I love maps, so this is pretty but I’ve never read Finding Alaska so I have no connection to this item.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee – I can’t wait to read this book! As cool as it is to have an exclusive cover, I don’t really like this version. Blue and orange aren’t really an appealing colour combination to me (but I know a friend of mine who would be obsessed with this version of the cover). The map is cool, but I wish it hadn’t been folded because I would have considered hanging it up. The best part might actually be the letter from the author because it is so darn cute. I mean, look how festive and adorable it is!

I’m sad to say that overall I am not impressed with this book and I have a hard time choosing a favourite item. I wanted to love it so much and I wasn’t blown away by anything.

The theme for next month is: Something Wicked This Way Comes.  The book is “an atmospheric and dark urban fantasy. It’s all about dangerous deals and demons!” The items in the box are inspired by Harry Potter, Edgar Allan Poe, Sleepy Hollow, Six of Crows, and This Savage Song. I’m still torn about getting this box, what book do you guys think will be in it? Personally, my guess is The Last Magician even though I don’t know if it has demons in it, but it was the only release that fit in my mind.

Great unboxing! I’ve been eyeing Owlcrate for a while now, but I find that every box has stuff in it that I don’t like or I wouldn’t know what to do with, so I’ve never taken the plunge. I hope the next box you get goes better!

Thanks! I definitely agree that it can be very hit or miss. There have been some items that I’ve loved and others that I’m just baffled as to why it was included. Have you ever tried any other bookish subscription boxes?

I haven’t found one that I’m truly in love with, so no. Just this month I subscribed to Lootcrate – they have a Harry Potter themed one, I couldn’t help myself! But it’s mostly miscellaneous items or clothing and doesn’t include any books. I’m still searching for the bookish one that suits me.

Oh, I got this month’s Lootcrate as well! Have you gotten your box yet? You can’t go wrong with Harry Potter.

I guess I got the next one…? (I find their system confusing, lol) I got the Magical Must-Haves, so I should get it in September.

Oh yeah, it is confusing. I’ve been debating about that one because I can’t even guess what’s going to be included.

It is! It has definitely grown on me and I’m actually planning to use it today when I walk to the library to pick up a couple books that just came in – so it’ll be quite useful!!

Great unboxing, Kyera!! Me and Owlcrate are always a struggle. I always get so excited for it, and the one box that I did fell so flat for me. A lot of the items are super cute, and that Circus one was amazing, but I see where there was a lot of eh for this one. I also got confused on why they chose to switch the font to orange. XD Wonderful unboxing, though!!

Thanks girl. I definitely think I hype myself up too much for them because I wanted to love it so much and then I wasn’t super excited. They do sell their leftover boxes though, so I think I’ve decided that in the future I’m just gonna wait to see what’s in it and then decide if I want the box.

YES. I do the same. I get all excited for them and then…bam. Not as exciting as we pinned our hopes on. But that’s a brilliant idea! And at least you get a little bit of discount on those, right? 🙂

I’m not sure…. that’s a good question. I know I always use a coupon code for the regular one.

Ahhhhh gotcha. I felt like I remember seeing a 25% price for it, but I may be imagining things. XD
