All Systems Red

All Systems Red by Martha Wells
The Murderbot Diaries, #1
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

All Systems Red is a sharp, clever novella that kicks off The Murderbot Diaries with dry humor, fast-paced action, and one of the most unexpectedly relatable protagonists in sci-fi. Murderbot — a rogue SecUnit who hacked its own governor module and just wants to be left alone to binge-watch media — is a reluctant hero with more depth than it’s willing to admit. The plot is engaging, but it’s the voice that truly makes this shine: sarcastic, hyper-competent, deeply introverted, and weirdly endearing.

The number of times Murderbot made me laugh out loud should probably be concerning. It’s not just funny — it’s smart, socially awkward, and emotionally layered in a way that sneaks up on you. If you love character-driven sci-fi that’s both thoughtful and wildly entertaining, this is a brilliant place to start.
