Nancy Drew: The Palace of Wisdom by Kelly Thompson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Nancy Drew: The Palace of Wisdom is the first Nancy Drew graphic novel (to my knowledge) and I loved the art in it. Nancy’s style was what I love black, plaid skirts, chokers, her hair, the boots, etc. so I think I was definitely swayed by that. I enjoyed her as a character, although sometimes she said unkind things or made questionable choices – which ended up making her not feel like the classic Nancy Drew people might be used to. They made a lot of efforts to modernize her and she definitely feels modern, she’s not the polite, charming 1930’s Nancy. Even the characters that readers might be familiar with have been modernized and there is more diversity in her friend group. So I think that people who really reminisce about classic Nancy won’t love this, but people who enjoy mysteries, graphic novels, and strong (if sometimes misguided) female characters will enjoy this graphic novel. I personally am excited to see where her story goes next and see how the authors continue to develop Nancy (and maybe even make her a little more familiar than she was in this collection.)
