And you can do anything...” ― Renee Ahdieh, Flame in the Mist _____________________ This quote always makes me want to sing the song from #Mulan - I'll Make A Man Out Of You! _____________________ Although the story is vastly different from the Wrath and the Dawn, Renée Ahdieh's poetic style of writing comes across just as beautifully in this novel as her previous series. The gorgeous writing is my favourite aspect of the book, followed very closely by the plot, characters, and the world. ... I have always been a huge admirer of the Japanese culture and love seeing the (fictional) historical representation of feudal Japan. There aren't a lot of examples of this that I have personally read and truly fallen in love with. Unlike Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles series, I feel that Renegades is not a series that is as universal a read. The Lunar Chronicles effortlessly blends science fiction with a fairytale retelling and I feel can draw people in even if they don't normally read either of those two. We meet the sisters, Scarlet and Tella, who have always dreamt of playing Caraval and escaping their lives on a boring, forgotten island. We hear tales of the mysterious Legend, master of the games and wielder of magic. And we learn that it's only a game - or is it? While I enjoyed Scarlet in Caraval, I didn't care for Tella at all so I was a little trepidatious about her being the lead of the second novel. Surprisingly, Garber was able to develop Tella's character in a way that provided her depth and motivation so that she became a more real and understandable character without completely changing who she was as a person in the first book. She's still selfish and flawed, but now we understand where she's coming from.
