Top 10 of 2020 – Graphic Novels

I wanted to do things a little differently this year and separate my ten favourite graphic novels from books. 2020 was definitely a year for graphic novels, so I wanted to show them some love.

Be sure to check out my top books of 2020 and my top anticipated reads of 2021!

The Night of Knives – or – The Rebel Army (Shades of Magic) by V.E. Schwab

Schwab did a fantastic job adapting her world from the Shades of Magic series into graphic novels to give us a glimpse into the King’s life when he was still known as Prince Maxim.

Strange Planet by Nathan W. Pyle

The little aliens were hilarious and their experiences were not-so-alien, I really related to a lot of them and each comic was super cute!

Vox Machina: Origins by Matthew Mercer

This was a super accessible and fun graphic novel based on a D&D campaign that I think readers would love if they enjoy fantasy and adventures, even if they’ve never watched Critical Role before.

Teen Titans: Beast Boy – or – Raven by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo

I thought the Teen Titans graphic novels were enjoyable and I adored the art, even though I am not super familiar with the Teen Titans – so I think they’re pretty universally appealing.

Primer by Jennifer Muro, Thomas Krajewski, and Gretel Lusky

The premise of this superhero story was really original and I loved the art!

New Kid (New Kid, #1)

New Kid by Jerry Craft

Craft tackled a lot of really important topics in an accessible way that I personally think makes this a must read graphic novel no matter your age.

Go With the Flow by Lily Williams

This is a story about friendship, but it’s also the story about being a girl and all of the messes that come with it. I think it tackles the issues that girls face everyday really well and is a great read for middle school and high school aged boys and girls.

Kiss Number 8 by Colleen AF Venable

This is a cute coming-of-age story that I think would also be great for middle school and high school aged boys and girls to read.

The Legend of Korra: Ruins of the Empire by Michael Dante DiMartino

I love the expanded universe created by the Legend of Korra and Avatar the Last Airbender graphic novels, so I needed to include the story that details the aftermath and attempted reconstruction of the Earth Empire.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Katara and the Pirate’s Silver by Faith Erin Hicks

I really enjoyed this standalone adventure featuring Katara being her super powerful self.

Did you read any of these graphic novels this year? Did you love them as much as I did, or were there some graphic novels that you read that I didn’t have on my list and I need to check out? Let me know in the comments!
