The Final Spark is the seventh and final book in the Michael Vey series. The author struggled with pacing and character development throughout the series, so I shouldn’t be surprised that the ending was less than satisfying – but I was hoping for more. The series builds to a penultimate moment and I felt that everything was tied together too neatly. Some of the main characters behaved in completely uncharacteristic ways and didn’t make sense with their previous narrative.
The series has always had a large cast of both main and supporting characters, but we were introduced to even more in the final book. The plot and characters should have been well established by the time we came to the end so that adequate time could be dedicated to having a detailed resolution. The extra build and addition of even more characters just took away from the storyline, which created pacing issues and left me as a reader unsatisfied with the ending.
Overall, it was a fun, easy series to read that is great for middle-grade readers. It stumbles, but the overarching message is one that kids will appreciate.
