I don’t know what you guys are planning to do in November, but I’m going to do NaNoWriMo. If you don’t know what NaNoWriMo is, it is short for National Novel Writing Month. You basically dedicate yourself to writing a novel over the course of November, about 1,667 words or 2.5 single-spaced pages per day, or 50,000 words per day.
They have a ton of great resources and fantastic writing advice, so it’s a nice place to explore if you’ve got the time. If you’re participating and so inclined, you’re welcome to add me as a writing buddy – I would love to connect with you on the site.
It’s terrifying and exciting at the same time. I know so many of us have tons of ideas bouncing around in our heads but never really allow them to flourish. You might not feel like you’re ready or you might feel like no one will read your book, but “the world needs your novel.” It’s important to get your ideas down and allow them to grow, even if you decide you never want them published.
It’s scary. I get it, I’m scared right now because I’m putting this out in the world. I’m letting everyone know that hey, I’m giving this a shot. I’m going to try to write my novel and dangit I’m going to succeed! But what if I don’t? Now I’ve gone and told everyone that I’m trying. They’ll judge me. They’ll be disappointed.
Yes, that may be true but more importantly, as long as you dedicated yourself to this even if you didn’t manage to get to the 50,000 words (as amazing as that would be) you tried. You put yourself and your story out there, and you know what? Maybe next NaNoWriMo, Camp NaNoWriMo or just next month when life is potentially less crazy – you’ll do it.
I believe in you and I’m trying to believe in myself. I can do it. I can write down the words, give life to my characters and make this story a real thing.
