Writing Confessions – NaNoWriMo

I don’t know what you guys are planning to do in November, but I’m going to do NaNoWriMo. If you don’t know what NaNoWriMo is, it is short for National Novel Writing Month. You basically dedicate yourself to writing a novel over the course of November, about 1,667 words or 2.5 single-spaced pages per day, or 50,000 words per day.

They have a ton of great resources and fantastic writing advice, so it’s a nice place to explore if you’ve got the time. If you’re participating and so inclined, you’re welcome to add me as a writing buddy – I would love to connect with you on the site.

It’s terrifying and exciting at the same time. I know so many of us have tons of ideas bouncing around in our heads but never really allow them to flourish. You might not feel like you’re ready or you might feel like no one will read your book, but “the world needs your novel.” It’s important to get your ideas down and allow them to grow, even if you decide you never want them published.

It’s scary. I get it, I’m scared right now because I’m putting this out in the world. I’m letting everyone know that hey, I’m giving this a shot. I’m going to try to write my novel and dangit I’m going to succeed! But what if I don’t? Now I’ve gone and told everyone that I’m trying. They’ll judge me. They’ll be disappointed.

Yes, that may be true but more importantly, as long as you dedicated yourself to this even if you didn’t manage to get to the 50,000 words (as amazing as that would be) you tried. You put yourself and your story out there, and you know what? Maybe next NaNoWriMo, Camp NaNoWriMo or just next month when life is potentially less crazy – you’ll do it.

I believe in you and I’m trying to believe in myself. I can do it. I can write down the words, give life to my characters and make this story a real thing.

So I would love to know, are you participating in NaNoWriMo this year? If so, I’m so excited that we’re on this crazy journey together.  Have you participated in the past? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts, success or horror stories, and advice.

Even if you’re not participating this year, but there is a story in your head just waiting to be heard – I encourage you to join at some point in the future. I would love to read your future novel.

Most importantly, I wish all participants the best of luck and hope that you don’t experience the dreaded hand cramp or writer’s block.

I make an attempt every year for the past 9 or 10 years. Only ‘won’ twice but I’ve got a good feeling about this year!

Adding you as a writing buddy. Good luck on your 50K!

I’ll be participating this year. Hoping to get that 50k, maybe even more. Some advice would be to take the opportunity to write when you can, even if it’s only 10 words.

What’s your project about? Have you got it all planned out?

    Good luck. 🙂

I wish you the best of luck! That’s definitely some great advice! My project is a fantasy. I’ve done so much world building in my head, built a mythology, can tell you anything about my characters even whether they are right or left handed, but haven’t quite figured out the finer points of my plot. So it’s a weird combination of super planning and utter pantsing.

I completely get that. I have my basic idea and then I’ve worked out things such as street names, characters names, but I’m just winging it when it comes to actual plot details.

Your words of wisdom were fantastic, Kyera! So inspirational. I can’t wait to see your progress! Is your novel going to a fantasy? I can’t remember if you’ve said what you’re going to be doing on here. Can’t wait to see what happens! Great post, Kyera! 🙂

Oh thank you. 😊 I’m not sure if I have either? But yes, it is a fantasy.

Oooooh, Kyera doing fantasy sounds fantastic. Are you going more high fantasy or I guess…low fantasy? XD I never know what to call the more medium fantasy? XD

High fantasy is generally categorized as something set in a world other than our own, so technically…. it’s not that. Sort of. According to my googling of sub genres, I’m even more confused. I can’t properly answer that. But magic, mythical creatures and things from our world (historical, rather than modern) will appear.. if that helps.
