As a fan of fairytale re-tellings, the concept that this book is based upon Arabian Nights was greatly intriguing. Shahrzad must weave her tales each night so that she may survive to see another dawn, whilst plotting the demise of her husband, the King. Her predecessors did not survive, a new wife each night and Shazi will not be like them. She has a purpose – she must avenge her family, her best friend who was taken and killed by her new husband. Will she succeed, will her plan be discovered or will her treacherous heart betray her?
Khalid, the caliph has more depth than Shazi originally realized. He was just seen as a murderer, cold, calculating and violent, but she learns more about him as her tales grant her days to live. His old tutor weaves a tale of a young boy whose mother is killed by his father, in front of him. The unkind words and accusations joined with no love. But what is the truth? The hard face sometimes cracks and reveals a different person, a less broken person.
Highly recommended young adult novel for fans of folklore/fairytale re-tellings, magic, love, and intrigue.
